Introduction And Selection Suggestions for Materials of Rotary Joints

There are many types of materials for rotary joints, and different materials have different characteristics and applicable situations.  Here are some common materials and characteristics of rotary joints:

1、 Metal materials

1) stainless steel

① Characteristics: It has good corrosion resistance and high temperature performance, suitable for harsh working environments such as marine, chemical and other fields. Meanwhile, the stainless steel material has a smooth surface, is easy to clean, and has a long service life.

② Application: Widely used in various rotating joints that require corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance.

2) carbon steel

① Characteristics: Carbon steel has good strength, excellent plasticity and toughness, and is suitable for manufacturing small section quenched and tempered parts. But the weldability is poor, and cracks are easily formed under water quenching conditions.

② Application: In rotary joints, carbon steel is often used to manufacture components with high loads, but attention should be paid to its weldability and heat treatment method.

3) aluminium alloy

① Features: Aluminum alloy rotary joints have good thermal conductivity and wear resistance, suitable for occasions that require heat dissipation or high strength requirements, such as mechanical equipment and other fields.

② Application: Aluminum alloy is a good choice for rotary joints that require lightweight and good thermal conductivity.

4) Ductile iron

① Characteristics: Ductile iron can improve the mechanical properties, plasticity, and toughness of cast iron, achieving higher strength than carbon steel.

② Application: Under certain specific working conditions, ductile iron rotary joints can provide good load-bearing capacity and stability.

2、 Non metallic materials

1) polyurethane

① Features: Polyurethane rotary joints have good elasticity and wear resistance, suitable for industries such as food and medical. At the same time, it also has a certain degree of corrosion resistance, which can resist the erosion of various chemicals and solvents.

② Application: Polyurethane material is widely used in rotary joints that require good elasticity and corrosion resistance.

2) Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)

① Characteristics: PTFE rotary joints have good corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance, and are widely used in high demand fields such as chemical, pharmaceutical, aerospace, etc. In addition, PTFE material has a smooth surface and does not adhere to foreign objects, making it easy to clean and maintain.

② Application: In rotary joints that require high temperature and strong corrosive medium transmission, polytetrafluoroethylene material is the preferred choice.

3) polypropylene

① Features: Polypropylene rotary joints have good toughness and corrosion resistance, and are suitable for industries such as food, medical, and pharmaceutical. It is non-toxic, odorless, non deformable, and has good safety assurance.

② Application: Polypropylene material is widely used in rotary joints that require high safety and corrosion resistance.

3、 Special materials

1) Silicon carbide special ceramics

① Characteristics: Compared with ordinary graphite rings, silicon carbide special ceramics have lower density, higher bending strength and compressive strength, lower coefficient of thermal expansion, more stable temperature resistance, and wear and high temperature resistance.

② Application: In extreme working conditions such as high temperature, high pressure, and strong corrosive environments, silicon carbide special ceramic rotary joints can provide excellent performance.

4、 Other precautions

1) Shell material: The shell of a rotary joint is usually made of copper because copper can withstand high-speed rotation and maintain good stability. But in situations with special requirements, such as high-temperature environments or special medium transmission, it is necessary to choose materials that better meet the requirements.

2) Sealing material: The selection and matching of sealing materials directly affect the quality and service life of rotary joints. Common sealing materials include carbon graphite, hard alloys, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, aluminum oxide, etc.  The selection of these materials should be determined based on the working medium, temperature, and pressure conditions of the rotary joint.

In summary, the material selection of rotary joints should be determined based on specific working conditions and requirements.  In the selection process, factors such as material performance characteristics, working environment, and cost-effectiveness should be fully considered.
