WHAT IS A GASKET SEAL?

Sealing gasket is a kind of sealing technologies used in machinery, equipment and pipelines wherever there is fluid, which uses internal and external materials for sealing. Sealing gaskets are made of metal or non-metallic materials by cutting, stamping or other craft and they are used for sealing and connecting between pipes and mechanical parts or between mechanical elements. According to the material, sealing gasket can be divided into metal gaskets and non-metallic gaskets. Metal gaskets include these made by copper, stainless steel, iron, aluminum and so on. Non-metal gaskets can be made by asbestos, paper, rubber or so.

Selection of the gasket is not an easy task, especially when it comes to the choice of gasket sealing material because there are many factors to consider. All these factors such as temperature, application, medium, pressure affect the sealing effect of the gasket and we are going to talk about two factors of them.

Temperature

In most selection, the temperature of the fluid is the primary consideration, which will quickly narrow the selection. When the operating temperature reaches the limit of the maximum operating temperature of a gasket, higher-grade gasket should be selected. 

Application

The most important parameters in the application are the type of flange and the bolts used. The size, number and grade of bolts in the application determine the payload and the pressure of gasket can be obtained from the load and the contact surface.

When installing, the surface of gasket should be cleaned, and there should not be any scratches and other defects.

Also, the outer diameter of the gasket should be smaller than the surface of the gasket. The inner diameter of the gasket should be slightly larger than that of the pipeline to avoid obstructing the fluid flow in the container or pipe.

What is more, the pre-tightening of the gasket should not exceed the requirements to prevent the gasket from over-compressing.

When installing the gasket, we should tighten the nuts in order. Generally, the tightening should cycle at least 2 to 3 times so that the stress distribution of the gasket is uniform.

For flammable and explosive media, safety tools should be used when replacing gaskets, so as to avoid sparks due to collision between the tools or bolts.

If the pipeline leaks, it must be depressurized before replacing or adjusting the gasket. It is strictly forbidden to operate under pressure.
